Here
in Woodlands we have all kinds of households. Some folk live
alone; some dwellings are multi-occupied by groups of friends.
Many couples and families have bought or rented flats and houses.
We are lucky to have a high proportion of traditional two-parent
families with children of all ages. However, it is sometimes
easy to overlook the contribution of lone parents to the local
community. Although not usually the most affluent of residents,
single mums and dads have a wealth of knowledge about local
schools, childcare, health and recreational facilities. They
are active in a variety of community projects, and are often
at home during the day. Two of them serve on the Woodlands committee.
More would always be welcome.
If
you are a lone parent, or perhaps a “weekend Dad”,
it’s often hard to know where to take the children on
holiday. Once you do get away, being the sole adult trying to
entertain the kids can be lonely and stressful. Even planning,
booking or travelling can be daunting on your own with youngsters.
And expensive too! To combat this isolating experience, the
Single Parent Travel Club (SPTC) was formed over a decade ago
so that one parent families nationwide, from all walks of life,
can enjoy travel and leisure together. Like-minded individuals
share ideas, travel tips, accommodation and transport costs,
and so make friends and savings.
Last
year, SPTC holidays included France, Greece, and Devon, to name
just three among many packaged and independent hotels, holiday
camps, villas, campsites… in fact, the only limit is people’s
imagination. In the past, Florida has featured strongly, while
this year Norfolk, Cornwall, Portugal and Kenya are on the cards.
In addition, there are youth hostelling weekends, along with
day trips and social gatherings. For many, a very real benefit
lies in meeting other single parents and sharing experiences.
Annual
membership costs just £7.50. For this, members receive
a list of others in their area, and four newsletters a year
detailing trips and events. Plus, now, an online message board
and discussion group allows members to plan by email for spontaneous
days out and last-minute trips. If you would like to find out
more about the SPTC, and get a copy of their newsletter, please
